Yes – (1)if you feel insecure and seeking a psychological safety or (2) if you plan to learn a skill – for instance, archery, martial arts, carpentry, programming etc.
You don’t need a guru to learn life. You don’t need a guru to transform yourself. You don’t need a guru for enlightenment. Two reasons: (1) you are a unique expression. Just like your fingerprint nobody is similar to you. So life poses different problems to different people. If you follow a guru, you will be taken through his path, not your path (2) this is something between you and your source (divine or cosmic or god, whatever) – you don’t need any middleman, broker or pimp to realize yourself.
Ancient scriptures say: “Guru-sakshat Para-Brahma” = means, Parabrahma (divine/cosmic) is your guru. A local guru may tell the just opposite to get something from the insecure you to increase his/her market share or to make the “gurudom” more powerful. In fact everything in your life is your GURU – the life is giving you millions of gurus. Dathathreya had 24 gurus from the nature – from the moth to the prostitute.
The Param-Atman alone is your Guru. If you observe and be aware, this force will teach you the lessons you need. That’s more than enough to get enlightened! No enlightened person – Buddha, Sankara, Dathathreya, Ramana, Jesus, etc – ever had a guru.
After reading my articles in the website, lot of people write to me seeking spiritual guidance. I used to reply that I am just a writer, and not a guide, but I am ready to share my experiences… Recently one person wrote to me that he considers me as his “spiritual guru”. I replied to him: “I am not in the business of gurudom. I am just a writer and no way better or worse than you. A writer should NOT get more respect than sewage cleaner. Everybody does his/her karma – respect each and every job. If you feel I am writing something unique or awesome, thanks go to my ancestors who have provided IT in my DNA. And spirituality has become a nauseating industry and I am not in it. I do not know the difference between spirituality and materialism – both are the one and same for me. So don’t force your perception on me”
I reply to my readers – if you like what I write, credit goes to the article. It came through the instrument known as “me”, that’s all. So, please do not follow me – I am no way a role model to anything – if you don’t mind, just adding me as your friend makes me very happy. Let’s share and care. Let’s be humane, not more than that.
