Kundli, Horoscope Match, Vedic Astrology – Real or Hoax?

“What’s your opinion on Vedic astrology and Vedic Kundli match, Udayji?” Jithesh Mishra from Patna.

“What do Vedic scriptures have to do with Kundli and astrology?” I asked him.

“You follow Vedic science. So you know Vedic astrology is also science, right?”

“Hmm…Are you mentioning Vedanga Jyotisha?”

“Yes, yes….that one”

“Ah! Is Vedanga Jyotisha about Janam Kundli and Horoscope Match?”

“Yes, of course. Millions of people including me believe in Vedic astrology and Janam Kundli!”

“Jitheshji, I respect your belief. But you are insulting our Dharma by using the words ‘Vedic astrology and Vedic Kundli’. I humbly request you NOT to insult our great Sages, Hindu Dharma, and science…”

“Why?”

“Vedas have NOTHING to do with astrology or Kundli match. Vedanga means limbs of the Veda. Jyotisha means Calendrics. Vedanga Jyotisha is the earliest known Indian text on Astronomy. It contains astronomical mathematics and observation necessary to ascertain the proper time for certain Vedic rituals or agricultural purposes. “

“So there is no astrology in Vedas?”

“Vedic astrology is a bad joke. Vedanga Jyotisha is astronomy. Astrology is its pathetic parody developed thousands of years later. Vedas date back to 7000 years in composition (not writing)”

“So, Vedic astrology is not true?”

“Vedic astrology is one of the biggest HOAXes in history. Kundli and Horoscope have absolutely nothing to do with Vedas or Science.”

“Are you sure about that?”

“To the best of my knowledge, there are nearly 2000 scriptures related to Vedas. I have talked to learned people. Kundli and Horoscope matching are nowhere mentioned in Vedas, Itihasas, or Puranas…”

“So, it is fake….”

“Must be. Let me repeat, Vedāṅga Jyotisha has nothing to do with predicting your future, determining your compatibility with a potential mate, or knowing when you should sell your stock in gold. It is about how the movement of the heavenly bodies marks the passage of time, and how to use that knowledge to know that right times for performing the right cultural ceremonies and rituals.”

“Can you give me few minutes Udayji…”

I agreed. He called after half an hour…

“Udayji, sorry for the break. I have just talked to my astrologer who has been collecting money from me. He didn’t give me a clear answer. But he says there is a mistake in what you said. What about the Vedic literature Brihat Parashara Hora Sastra ?”

“Brihat Parashara Hora Sastra dates back to the 7th and early 8th-century era. Do you think Vedas originated during 7–8th Century?”

“No…no…”

“If your astrologer is confused, tell him about more books he might want to refer. Aryabhatiya by Aryabhatta, Romaka by Latadeva, Panca Siddhantika by Varahamihira, Khandakhadyaka by Brahmagupta and Sisyadhivrddida by Lalla and Surya Siddhanta. These are astronomical calculations. If you want specific astrology-related books, read Phaladeepika, Uttara Kalamrita, Saravali, Bhrigu Sutram, Brihat Jataka, Jataka Parijata, Kalaprakasika, Jaimini Shastra, Brighu Samhita…”

“So many books on astrology! Still, you say it is fake?”

“There are vernacular scriptures related to plundering and robbery – Dasyu Dharma, Thaskara Shastra, etc… I don’t think you will hail robbery just because you have scriptures about it. I am not an authority to say those scriptures are fake or real. All I can say is Astrology, Kundli or Horoscope Matching, etc have nothing to do with Vedic scriptures or science. Astrology is a belief-based story. It is neither science nor truth. And astrology is NOT of Indian origin too. It came from Egypt and Rome…”

“Why are you so sure about it?”

“My research. What’s more, Vedas and Upanishads never encouraged blind beliefs or thinking without questioning. Astrology is heavily bent towards blind belief(s). If someone questions it logically, they say “Shastras told so”. I have talked to many learned astrologers, no one could give a logical answer to me. Bhagavad Gita or any genuine works of literature till that period have nothing to say about astrology. It was not known nor practiced in India then. The authentic Puranas or Scriptures till Krishna’s period do not even mention about such Kundli Match superstitions.”

“Udayji, Could you please give me two minutes?”

“I know you want to talk to your astrologer again. Please don’t waste my time. My Karma is NOT arguing or winning, but to know and inform. I have an open view of life and scriptures and I go by truth or science as facts are sacred to me…You have the freedom to believe in whatever you want. But Kundli or Horoscope is neither Vedic nor scientific – that’s all I say. Meanwhile, I respect your beliefs.”

“Ok, I understand. Please, one more question Udayji, all astrologers say that the position of the moon and sun cause ocean tides. They say planets influence of human body which contains 90% is water”… (To be continued).
