Jihad, Crusade and Dharma Yuddha
“Is there any difference between Jihad, Crusade and Dharma Yuddha?” many readers ask this question.
“Is it true that religion has killed more people throughout history than any other cause?” recently one of my friends asked.
“Could be, we don’t have correct statistics. Some studies say that 809 million people have died in religious wars (Oops – that’s nearly a billion people!) till today in this world. But there is no historical data.”
“So Jihad, Crusade or Dharma Yuddha, all are same?”
“Technically it is not. Dharma Yuddha is never against non-believers. Jihad is mainly against non-believers (infidels). Crusade was mostly against Muslims. But whichever way, killing is killing and it is a deplorable act and inhuman…”
“In fact, humanist ideologies should replace religions…”
“What ideology?”
“Communism for instance….”
“That’s a huge joke…when it comes to death toll, the so called ‘secular ideals’ and non-religious Communism is not far away with 94 million killed in the 20th century alone. It is said that Stalin slaughtered his own people by the millions during the industrialization of Soviet Russia.”
“However, currently biggest threat in the world is Jihadi terrorism. What’s your stake on Jihadi killing?”
“According to Arabic scholars, ‘Jihad’ is an Arabic word derived from ‘Jahada’, which means to strive or to struggle. For example, if you are trying hard to get a job, you are doing Jihad. Jihad is often translated as “Holy War”, although this term is controversial. A person engaged in jihad is called a Mujahid , the plural of which is Mujahideen.”
“Ah, but for a common man in the world, Jihad means brutal violence and disorder.”
