It is SAVITRI mantra, NOT Gayatri
What’s the name of this popular mantra: “Om bhur bhuvaha svaha Tat savitur varenyam Bhargo devasya dhimahi Dhiyo yo nah prachodayat”.
I have received 4821 replies so far (7 hours after posting). I am glad they all have identified the Hymn. Except few, all of them said it is Gayatri Mantra.
But it’s a WRONG answer. However, you are NOT responsible for this mistake. You’re being taught like that. Can’t blame anyone for this popular misconception. I was also taught like that.
The correct answer is Savitri Mantra. Only 27 people answered it correctly.
There is no such specific Mantra as Gayatri Mantra. For, Gayatri is NOT a Mantra. It is a Chandus (poetic meter). There are many Hymns set in the Chandus of Gayatri – all those Hymns can be called Gayatri Mantras.
The Savitri Mantra is set in Gayatri Chandus. This is the most popular 24-syllabled Mantra in the Gayatri Chandus. Krishna, in Bhagavad Gita, says, Amongst poetic meters I am the Gayatri
However, the attempt to answer the question shows your keen interest in knowledge. My humble pranams. Actually, knowledge is not important, but the interest to know is. Knowledge will remain just as information and it won’t transform you. For that, you need “Jijnasa”. It is the ‘desire to know’. The Curiosity. It shows you’re on the right path.
